Samsung had just recently released their S20 Flagship line-up. Also, the Note line-up for the current year isn’t even announced yet. However, that does not stop the leaks from making their way to the internet. So, today we have a leak which says that Samsung Galaxy S21 Series might be equipped with an under-display selfie camera technology.
One of the known leakers – Ice Universe – leaked this information. It might just be too early to say whether this ends up being true or not. So, just take this leak with a pinch of salt – No, that does not mean eating salt while reading this.
It is known that Samsung’s S-Series is where the brand introduces newer features or design – especially, for the camera. The Galaxy Note Series is usually a small upgrade over the S-Series with an inclusion of the S-Pen. So, this leak does make sense – considering the history of Samsung.
Even if Samsung introduces this by next year, it remains to be seen how good the camera would be. That’s because of the lesser amount of light reaching the camera sensor – which also results in poor image quality. Also, even if they manage to get decent quality from the camera sensor itself, it’ll still be interesting to see how they would manage the pixel density around the camera sensor. If they try to maintain equal density all over the screen, we might face the problem of worse image quality.
All those flaws which I’ve pointed above are due to the lack of technology today. However, this is a device which would be launched next year. So, several technological enhancements are possible by then which would allow us to make such devices.
Also, Samsung is currently the best mobile display manufacturer in the industry. So, if we have to develop a screen which is so complicated, they are our best bet. Having said that, we haven’t seen any prototypes or demos by Samsung showing off this technology. However, that might be just because they aren’t ready to be shown to the world – yet.
This is not an impossible technology. There are brands like Oppo who have achieved this and even showcased it previously. We even wrote an article explaining how that technology works. There were a few flaws at that time – which I’ve already mentioned above. However, as the technology has improved over time, we can expect to see such implementation in the near future. Until then, let’s continue keeping our eyes on these leaks.
